Originating from my travels through the southwestern United States, this piece pays homage to two very different sides of nature. The canyons and mountains, carved and built over millions of years, stand today as they did yesterday and as they will tomorrow. In many ways, the sense of grounding we feel comes not just from the massive scale of these features but also from their resilience and supremely slow yielding to the forces around them. In contrast, the eclipse - lasting only a few fleeting minutes - captures us in the clarity of being present in the moment. Although the sunlight may be blocked, our sense of wonder opens an inner light, revealing laughter and awe that are always present around us.
